What is a Montana Double Proxy Marriage?

Montana Double proxy marriages have been legal under Montana state law since the 1800s. A Montana Double Proxy Marriage is a fully legal marriage, and allows both the the bride and the groom to have “proxies” stand in for them at the wedding ceremony, and say, “I do” for them. The ceremony is done in Montana, and solemnized by a judge or officiant.

I’m in the U.S. Military, but my fiancee isn’t…can we get married by Montana Double Proxy?

Yes! Montana state law requires that only one person (the bride or the groom) be an active member of the U.S. Military.

Do either of us need to be present for a Montana Double Proxy Marriage?

Neither the bride or groom needs to be present. A proxy will stand in for each of you, during the marriage ceremony.

Absolutely! Most of our brides and grooms so exactly that. After becoming married by proxy, you can certainly have a wedding where you invite all of your friends and family, have a wedding cake, and all of the celebratory things that come with a traditional wedding.

Yes! All 50 states, and U.S. Territories will recognize your proxy marriage.

What’s the deal with Iowa? I heard that they won’t recognize proxy marriages?

Iowa does recognize proxy marriages, but there is some additional paperwork and further perfection necessary for Iowa to recognize it. MPPM can assist you with this process.

I’m a U.S. citizen, but my fiancee isn’t. How does U.S. Immigration consider our marriage?

USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) will recognize your proxy marriage after it has been consummated. Generally though, USCIS usually gives preferential treatment to your fiancee’s immigration status, once you have a proxy marriage (even if it’s not consummated yet).

Will other countries recognize my proxy marriage?

Yes! Foreign countries which recognize U.S. marriages will recognize your proxy marriage. (Please note that consummation of your marriage may be required by some countries.)
